God's kingdom advances through weakness.
The disciples of Jesus had used every method they knew. They had mustered as much will power as they could manage, it even seemed their hearts were in it but their ministry hadn't accomplished anything tangible. When they asked Jesus why they couldn't drive out a particular demon from an oppressed child, he replied, "This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer" (Mark 9:29, ESV).
That phrase, "by anything but prayer" strikes me. It would seem that Jesus is saying that there are things that cannot be accomplished by good theory, strength of will or sincerity of heart; they can only be accomplished by God, through prayer. This means, then, that our very inabilities and weakness are useful and needed so long as we enter into what God is doing by way of prayerful faith.
With that in mind, we will begin simply by gathering together to prayerfully contemplate Jesus' vision for us to be "who we are where we are" over the course of three Vision Nights.
