July Newsletter

"Blessed are the poor in Spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."

If ever there were a manifesto for life in God's kingdom, it is Jesus' Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7).  We began our summer series of Colossae Beaverton Vision Nights with prayers longing for God's kingdom to break into our city and lives.  We will turn our attention this next Thursday night to prayers expressing our spiritual poverty and need.

Our greatest need as a new forming congregation this summer is to become more and more saturated in prayer.  Jesus describes the people who experience the reign and rule of God as poor in Spirit.  In other words they are people who get what they don't have in and of themselves.  They are the ones who mourn over what is wrong in the world and in themselves, they are humble and therefore hunger for what is right and what God gives.  They show mercy and keep their hearts from conflicting affections.  They make peace with and between enemies and endure persecution in pursuing justice in the name of Jesus.  This is the character of God's kingdom movement.

Will you make a commitment to pray toward God's kingdom, experienced among us and unveiled through us in Beaverton?  Would you pray along the lines of the "Be-attitudes" (Matthew 5:2-12) which define kingdom character to define our congregation?  Pray in a journal, on walks, on the way to the break room, in traffic, in your favorite chair, or prostrate in your backyard.

I hope you sense a restless desperation for the Spirit among us; I believe God wants us to partner with him in His mission and it starts by simply being together in prayer, waiting on the Spirit with readiness to join in.
